The decorated instructor, an SAS veteran, said the military is currently recruiting the ‘wrong people’ and that the return of National Service would change this. Billingham, 59, believes there is too much of an emphasis on the combat side of military serviceand not enough focus on engineering, communications and medics. He hopes that the armed forces can target a new demographic of recruits and give teenagers an alternative route out of education. Billy Billingham believes the 'wrong people' are currently being recruited Billingham told the Headliners podcast: “The wrong people are being recruited for the wrong reasons. “As soon as you say military, most people’s vision and perspective is conflict and war. “The war fighting side is (a tiny proportion) but we have the best engineers, the best communications, the best medics, the best animal vets; that is such a great opportunity so I think young kids who are leaving school, and not going to further education or a proper job, should go into the national service. “It shouldn’t be run as the infantry side, the warfighting side, it should be the trades so it’s no different to school, really.” Billingham has been part of Channel 4’s SAS Who Dares Wins since 2016 and replaced Ant Middleton as chief instructor in 2023. Billingham says it it should be no different than going to school (Image: BBC ) He said a paid two-year long national service for 16 year old’s would greatly reduce the levels of anti-social behaviour seen in towns across the country. He explained: “You as a parent aren’t going to worry ‘has my child just been stabbed out on the street, is he missing or she missing, is he caught in drugs, you know where they are for two years: they’re living a half-decent good life.” Earlier this year Rishi Sunak announced plans to reintroduce National Service: saying 18-year-olds would be required to take part in the scheme or lose some of their freedoms. National Service, also known as conscription, is a system where young people are required to serve in the military for a certain period of time. Billy Billingham, who is a instructor on the popular TV show SAS: Who Dares Wins, believes that reintroducing National Service would have numerous benefits for the country and its youth. He argues that it would: 1. **Improve discipline and respect**: Billingham thinks that National Service would help to instill discipline and respect in young people, which he believes is lacking in modern society. 2. **Promote teamwork and camaraderie**: He believes that serving in the military would teach young people the importance of teamwork, camaraderie, and working towards a common goal. 3. **Provide life skills and education**: National Service would provide young people with valuable life skills, such as first aid, navigation, and leadership, which would benefit them throughout their lives. 4. **Reduce crime and antisocial behavior**: Billingham suggests that National Service would help to reduce crime and antisocial behavior by giving young people a sense of purpose and direction. 5. **Improve physical and mental health**: He believes that the physical and mental challenges of military service would help to improve the overall health and wellbeing of young people. Billingham's comments have sparked a debate about the potential benefits and drawbacks of reintroducing National Service in the UK. Some arguments against National Service include: 1. **Lack of freedom**: Compulsory military service would restrict young people's freedom to choose their own path in life. 2. **Inequity**: National Service could disproportionately affect certain groups, such as those from disadvantaged backgrounds or with certain medical conditions. 3. **Cost**: Implementing and maintaining a National Service program would be costly and could divert resources away from other important public services. Ultimately, the decision to reintroduce National Service would require careful consideration of the potential benefits and drawbacks, as well as consultation with various stakeholders, including politicians, military leaders, and the general public. ) )
